Mouthguards

With the winter sport season fast approaching, it's time to think about protecting your teeth.  Mouthguards are an essential part of sport for adults and children.

Most sports, whether contact or not, carry a risk of a knock to the face and subsequent dental injury.  Lost and broken teeth can lead to long and expensive dental treatment.  The sports medicine association reports that 50% of children experience some form of dental injury.  When it comes to sport, prevention is better than cure.

Mouthguards help to absorb the shock, cushion a blow to the face and minimise the risk of broken teeth and injury to the mouth.  The Australia Dental Association recommends a "custom made" mouthguard rather than an over the counter "boil and bite" style.  A custom made mouthguard has the correct coverage and thickness for you and is much more comfortable to wear.  It allows you to talk easily and it isn't as restrictive to your breathing.

Your mouthguard should be reviewed every 12 months and it may need to be replaced if you have changes to your teeth such as restorations or loss of teeth.  Children's mouthguards should be reviewed every 6 months during their preventive care visit because their mouth and teeth are constantly changing shape and mouthguards can also be worn during orthodontic treatment.

Anzac Avenue Dental can make your custom made mouth guard in one simple visit and they are also available in a range of colours.  For more information or to schedule your appointment, call 07 3491 8131.
